A History of Religious Settlement in the Neepawa Area



Anglican

First service held 6 miles SW at Mr. Paterson's (whose daughter had purportedly been kidnapped by Indians).
1881 - regular services at Orange Ridge
1885 - First service in town at Dr. McFadden's, then held at Court House and Orange Hall.
1889 - First permanent place of worship, destroyed by fire in 1897.
1897 - Present church built.
1922 - Tower and bell added.

Baptist

1891 - Church built on the corner of 1st and Boundary.
1903 - Glendale Church constructed.

Pentecostal - Calvary Chapel

1943 - Rev. & Mrs. Elmer Cantelon came to Neepawa to begin the first Pentecostal church, which was conducted in the lower area of their home
1955 - Church building erected and dedicated
1964 - A new manse was built on the same site as the previous resident (which doubled as the chapel).
1979 - New sanctuary was added to the existing church building

Presbyterian

1877 - Rev. James S. Stewart - missionary from Palestine (now Gladstone) made regular visits up to Little Sask conducting services.
1879 - J.C. Willet worked the Salisbury district with James Crawford. Rev. Finlay McLeod was also in the area.
1881 - Rev. D. McRae set Neepawa as his headquarters in the upper story of a building in the east end of Hamilton.
1882 - a larger place was needed--between 1st and Second & a block south of Hamilton. Opened October 29th.
1885 - July 24th - Rev. S.C. Murray arrived with his bride the day after the volunteers returned from the Riel Rebellion.
1891 - present church (Knox) erected on the corner of 1st and Mill.
1892 - March 15th - opened with Reverend S.C. Murray.
1925 - lost members to the United Church when the Methodists and Presbyterians joined.

Roman Catholic

1886 - First Catholic activity in this area (Minnedosa)
1926 - St. Dominics built.

United (Methodist)

The Methodist faith took hold after the Riel Rebellions. Rev. Thomas Lauson from Toronto ministered to this district.
1879 - The mission was divided - Rev. Walton of Edmonton took Salisbury/Stoney Creek and the families that would make up early Neepawa.
1881 - First church was build in Neepawa. 1925 - joined with the Presbyterians to form the United Church.
